What's Yume Nikki / Earthbound?

What was supposed to be Square's "Final" game before it ended up being a success and they made a bunch more of them.

Complete Fan JRPGs to recommend?

To my knowledge, Everlong began as an outright Final Fantasy fangame, and still has many remnants of when it was. It's still being updated to this day, nearly 20 years later.

Need free experienced Mapper for commercial medieval RPG Maker Vx Ace Game.

MY ROLE: I will be the head writer, lead game designer, and overall head honcho of the project.

This paired with a lot of the "I'm not sure if I can do this or if the game will sell" aspects of this thread doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, especially since you're asking people to work for exposure.

Unfortunately yes, you do need to be able to do many of these things on your own or at least have a fundamental understanding of them. A good project manager knows and understands how to get their team to achieve the results they want. That's the difference between a Project Manager and an Ideas Guy.

Don't be an Ideas Guy.

You really might want to reconsider commercial game development for the time being and tackle it again when you've got a better grip on this. Join some jams and events and make yourself known.

Good Day Everybody, It's Me.

I was wondering where you went! Hello there.

Steam RPGMaker Scene

I have a complicated relationship with selling my games commercially and the gist of it is that while it was one of the coolest things I've ever done in my life (Soma Spirits hit Steam in 2017, before Steam Direct) it also made developing games less fun, so I have not been developing my current project with commercialism dead-set in mind.

If you're not sure commercialism is the route you want to go in and want to start with something low risk, you can always test the waters by having a "name your own price" title on itch io to see if it goes anywhere.

Is VR Killing the JRPG?

author=kory_toombs
I don't really see VR becoming more than a niche thing at the moment.

I feel like there's a ton of developers and industry leaders who swear up and down that there's this massive demand for VR that will be impossible to keep up with.

Maybe I'm in this weird bubble among my friends, but... where is this demand, exactly? I can't remember the last time I've seen someone go "Wow, I really wish there was more VR". it's always kind of been something I've played at an arcade or a mall kiosk, had a nice time with it, but never wanted a home experience beyond that.

Maybe I'll look back on this post in two years and eat my own words, but at this point in time I feel like there's this massive disconnect between what the industry thinks people want versus what they actually want.

Sonic Gets A Movie But Bubsy Doesn't, What The Hell!

Well, they're back to making Bubsy games, because some company misread memes as actual demand. So maybe we'll get that movie after all.

What are you thinking about right now?

Misao Category Review

staff picks

If you think about it, the Featured Games are kinda staff picks. So I don't think we need a Misao for it, too.

To be or not to be... commercial?

author=Shinan
Let's say you put a 5€ pricetag on it on steam. Then you have it on Itch.io with a pay what you want model (with a recommended price of 5€). That could be a way to keep the "prestige" of a commercial game but the availability of a free one.

Just make sure you make it very clear that the difference exists to potential buyers. You really don't want to upset people who bought the game on Steam but then later learned they could download it for free elsewhere.
